Position Summary

The Software Engineer I develops, tests, and deploys production software solutions from approved specifications and prototypes using START's AI-assisted software development framework. Under the guidance of the Director, Software Engineering, this role collaborates with technical and business stakeholders to deliver secure, maintainable, and scalable applications that support business operations.

Success in this position requires strong problem-solving skills, sound technical judgment, accountability for code quality, and the ability to effectively leverage and validate AI-generated solutions. This role offers a structured development path toward Software Engineer II through mentorship, hands-on experience, and increasing technical responsibility.

This is a remote role. The salary range for this role is $110,000 - $140,000. However, base pay may vary depending on multiple individualized factors including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

Work Hours: M-F, 8am-5pm

Essential Responsibilities

Develop, test, and maintain software applications from approved specifications, prototypes, and technical requirements.

Effectively utilize approved AI-assisted development tools while maintaining ownership of solution quality, maintainability, and performance.

Create and maintain automated tests to validate functionality and support reliable deployments.

Participate in code reviews and apply feedback to improve software quality and engineering practices.

Deploy software through established CI/CD pipelines and follow development, release, and version-control standards.

Collaborate with Systems Engineering and other technical teams to support application infrastructure requirements.

Query and maintain data within relational database environments using SQL.

Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve software defects and production issues.

Support software validation, traceability, and documentation requirements for regulated systems.

Follow company security, privacy, and AI governance standards.

Continuously develop technical skills and remain current with evolving software development technologies and practices.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field; equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered.

1-3 years of software development experience, including professional experience, internships, academic projects, or personal projects demonstrating software development skills.

Experience using AI-assisted development tools and the ability to evaluate, validate, and troubleshoot AI-generated code.

Proficiency in at least two of the following: C#, Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, SQL, or Java, with exposure to related frameworks and development environments.

Knowledge of software development fundamentals, including object-oriented programming, data structures, algorithms, debugging, testing, and version control.

Experience writing and executing SQL queries in a relational database environment.

Familiarity with source control systems, such as Git, and collaborative software development practices.

Ability to receive and apply technical feedback through code reviews and mentoring.

Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.

Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

Demonstrated adaptability and willingness to learn new technologies, tools, and development methodologies.

Preferred Education and Experience

Experience with modern AI-assisted software development tools in academic, personal, or professional projects.

Exposure to CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and software deployment practices.

Experience developing applications using cloud-based platforms, preferably Microsoft Azure.

Experience with web application development, including HTML, CSS, and modern JavaScript frameworks such as React.

Familiarity with application architecture, API development, and system integrations.

Experience working with sensitive, regulated, or highly governed data environments, including healthcare, life sciences, financial services, or similar industries.

Exposure to software validation, traceability, change control, audit readiness, or other quality-focused development practices.

Understanding of software security, privacy, and secure coding principles.

Physical and Travel Requirements

Approximately 80% of time is spent sitting.
